Since the market for hemp-derived CBD extract has grown rapidly over the years, it’s all the more important to address some of the misleading information out there surrounding hemp oil extract.

Myth: Hemp-derived CBD products are a recent discovery.

The market surrounding hemp has grown exponentially over the past few years, but that doesn’t make CBD a new discovery. In fact, we have found references of different cultures growing and cultivating hemp plants for use in folk medicine as early as 8,000 BCE.

Instead, what’s happened is that consumers are moving away from more chemical-based supplements and medications and pushing for organic and holistic options — making room for hemp-derived CBD oil to join the market. Consumers are drawn to CBD’s ability to help with a range of ailments due to it’s anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

Myth: There is no scientific support for CBD and hemp extract products.

While we’re talking about the increasing popularity of CBD products, it’s important to touch on the trove of scientific support and studies out there backing CBD and hemp extract products.

The 2018 Farm Bill declassified hemp and hemp products, making CBD widely available at grocery stores, health stores, and other holistic and organic businesses. This has also made it even easier to test and study how hemp and CBD work in the body — and complement our body’s own endocannabinoid system. For example, scientists have been studying the effect of CBD on seizures in children. Beyond that, other studies have been done to show how hemp extract affects inflammation and pain.

Myth: Formulas with hemp-derived CBD don’t work.

Did you use a hemp extract product and nothing happened? That doesn’t mean that your formula didn’t work. Hemp-derived CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system, a system that is responsible for regulating brain function, your immune system, emotions, mood, and pain receptors.

So you can think about hemp-derived CBD like a medication. If you take something like Tylenol when you’re not sick, you won’t notice a difference. Before you start taking a hemp oil extract formula, think about something you’re trying to target. Do you experience chronic pain or inflammation? Are there certain parts of your body that are stiff? Are you having trouble falling asleep or relaxing your mind at night? Once you have something you’re trying to treat or improve, then you can start taking your hemp oil supplement.

Myth: All hemp-derived CBD is the same.

Hemp oil extract is measured in milligrams so you can easily dose out how much you want or need. The dosage you’re taking plays a large role in how you use and the benefits you gain from that product. 

Currently, hemp oil extract and products are not regulated by the FDA. Since many of the hemp oil extract products and the manufacturers of those products on the market are relatively new, make sure you do your due diligence as a customer to ensure you’re getting the highest-quality product.

Myth: Hemp oil extract products are psychoactive.

The hemp plant is most commonly — and incorrectly — confused with the marijuana plant. While they are part of the same family, they contain different properties. The most important distinction is that hemp plants and hemp-derived CBD oil do not contain THC, the psychoactive component found in marijuana plants. Because THC is missing from hemp plants, hemp or CBD oil extracted from a hemp plant does not have the ability to make you high or give you any of the psychoactive effects associated with marijuana.
